Be sure and purchase a really good potting soil if you do not
have a composter. You can also make your own compost by
combining equal parts of loamy garden soil, peat moss, and sand.
Commercial potting mixes are great, but also a little acidic, so
you may want to add a little lime. Most gardeners have found
that a “soilless” potting mix works best for them all the way
around.
Every gardener can use the soil right from your garden, and
to even start seedlings indoor, but garden soil does have its’
disadvantages because you don’t know what’s coming in with the
soil. Plant eating insects, disease spores, bacteria, weed seeds
and assorted other things unwanted things can easily catch a
ride with your garden soil. To use outdoor soil, be sure and
sterilize it first with some kind of heat treatment. There is
also the issue of lack of drainage. Most garden soils tend to be
a little heavy. Without letting the soil get tilled by
earthworms or other insects, or without tilling it yourself, the
soil begins to compact after watering several times. After
compaction it is especially hard on tender roots of young
seedlings to even get established. A good soilless mix gives
your more control. Besides being free of diseases and other
contaminates, you can monitor water retention and air space.

What’s in a Soilless Potting Mix?
A lot of, or most soilless mixes are made up of mostly
Sphagnum Peat Moss. Sphagnum peat is somewhat renewable, light
weight, and inexpensive. It is perfect for you

qualities and most seed starting kits have a soil PH around 5.8,
which is okay for most garden seeds. There are amendments added
to the Sphagnum Peat, which are described here and include:
Vermiculite: is a natural mineral that
expands with the application of heat absorption. The
expansion process is called exfoliation and it is routinely
accomplished in purpose-designed commercial furnaces for
example. Vermiculite is formed by hydration of certain
basaltic minerals in the plant. It’s a mica-type material
that is heated up and expanded to increase its watering
retention capacity. The particles in Vermiculite soak up
water and nutrients to hold them in the mix until the plants
are ready to access them.
Bark: Bark is added to improve airspace
and drainage within the mix. This means that is will
slightly decrease the water retention. Please remember that
bark mixes are better for use with mature plants that need
to dry between watering rather than starting garden seeds.
Coir: Coir is a coarse fiber extracted
from the fibrous outer shell of a coconut. It works similar
to peat in providing good drainage and retaining water. Some
people use Coir when peat is hard to come by for purchase or
findings.
Perlite: is an amorphous, volcanic
glass that has a relatively high water content. It is
typically formed by the hydration of obsidian. Obsidian is a
naturally occurring glass formed extrusive igneous rock. It
occurs naturally and has the unusual property of greatly
expanding when heated sufficiently and thoroughly. It is an
industrial mineral and a commercial product useful for its
light weight after processing it. It adds in drainage and in
air and water retention for your plants to add that magical
balance your plants need. It is sometimes used in outdoor
gardening to prevent sandy soil from leaching nutrients.
If you need a large quantity of mix, or have a need for a
special blend, it is most generally easier to simply create your
own potting mix for your garden planters. Here are some basic
recipes to improvise with for your Soilless Potting Mixes:
Basic Soilless Potting Mix 4-6 parts
Sphagnum Peat Moss 1 part Vermiculite 1 part Perlite
Water Evenly to roots
Basic Mix with Compost 2-4 parts
Sphagnum Peat Moss 2 parts compost 1 part Perlite
1 part Vermiculite Water Evenly to roots
Sunlight
Whether referring to your
Hanging Planters or container
gardening, your plants will need at least five hours of direct
sunlight each day. It is best to set out your plants in the
morning and gather them back in before the afternoon’s heat sets
in. Every plant requires its own set of sunlight rules, but as a
general rule, five hours will suffice. Leafy vegetables, such as
cabbage and lettuce, can tolerate mostly shade. But root crops
such as carrots and beets need more sun then leafy vegetables.
Cucumbers and tomatoes need the most sun. The amount of sunshine
that flowers need depends on the varieties grown together. Be
sure and check the sunlight requirements, especially when mixing
garden seeds, to make sure they correlate well together. Your
garden planters are an important decision when transporting your
garden. For instance:
Since a lot of potting mixes drain water quickly, fertilizer
will be rinsed out of the container as you water your plants.
Lighter mixes, which we discussed above, will require more
frequent fertilizer then heavier mix. It is a very good idea to
use a dilute liquid fertilizer than heavier mixes for every
other watering time. Liquid Seaweed or Liquid Fish Emulsion are
great plant boosters, and remember that you need to provide your
plants with a variety of nutrients to grow.
Watering
Along with the right soil and fertilizer, it is essential to
get your watering technique down pat. Water is essential to the
promotion of your garden. For a healthy and bountiful garden,
you must make sure that your plants are getting plenty of water
without over doing it. Over doing it can flood the soil and
drown your plants. Please keep in mind that different plants,
different climates, and different weathering days require
different amounts of water supply.
One of the great things to do with container gardening is
having an herb garden. Not only can you grow near the kitchen
where you really need it, but its a lot easier to have fresh
herbs. There is no back breaking labor of going out to the
garden and picking the herb or even when the weather doesn't
permit you to go outside. Either way, its just convenient.
If you don't have the luxury of a big backyard to do your
gardening, there are plenty of areas where you can implement
container gardening. Even on the smallest ledge or balcony, you
